The Immersive Artist-in-Residence Program

The Immersive Artist-in-Residence program (the Residency) is an initiative created by Toronto Downtown Jazz (TDJ), producers of the annual TD Toronto Jazz Festival, through which one or two emerging and/or mid-career artists are paid a monthly stipend to develop a new project, lead/participate in regular TDJ outreach and engagement activity, and prepare for a Festival performance.

We are pleased to announce that Naomi McCarroll-Butler has been selected as the 2022 TD Toronto Jazz Festival Immersive Artist-in-Residence! Over the next five months, Naomi will create an instrumental suite of music for a 15-piece ensemble of improvisers playing various horns, strings, synthesizers and percussion. Inspired by the large ensembles of Alice Coltrane, Matana Roberts, Charles Mingus, Hafez Modirzadeh and Amir ElSaffar, the music will combine elements of through-composition with improvisation from the various idioms of the performers.

As part of the Residency, the public will be invited behind the scenes of Naomi's creative process through live-streaming, public workshops, open rehearsals and more; Naomi and the ensemble will premiere the new suite of music in performance at the 2022 TD Toronto Jazz Festival.

Naomi was selected from an outstanding array of submissions by a panel of local music specialists:

  • Dani Elwell, Broadcaster and award winning programmer, Creative Strategist for JAZZ.FM91
  • Chris Wilson, previous Talent Booker and Music Programmer for The Drake Hotel, assembling and managing an innovative, diverse and attractive year-round program of high-quality music. Currently working as a Creative Producer for Somewherelse.
  • Jon Campbell, who works on live events, strategy, the Global Toronto conference/showcase, eMERGEnce artist-development program, and more with Small World Music.

More information about Naomi, and her project, is available here.
